It was late in the 1970 season, and the Yankees were struggling with attendance the year after Mickey Mantle retired.  In an attempt to attract fans to the stadium, the team brought Mickey back to coach first base.  The regular coach, Elston Howard, took the first three innings, Mantle the middle three, then Howard returned for the final three.  In Mickey's first game on the job, August 30th, Roy White hit a grand slam to give the Yankees the win.  This Type I press photograph is from that game, and depicts Bobby Murcer taking a lead while the Twins' Rich Reese holds him on and Mantle watches from his coaching position.  The coaching experiment lasted only 19 home games, and he did not return the next season.  Not many people remember Mantle's time as a coach, and there are few original pictures commemorating it.  This is one of those rarities.  Note that it is the original Type I press photo, not a wire or a copy.  It has the minor creases, tears, and dings typical in original press photos, and the yellow UPI description paper will fold back if you choose to display it that way.  The item is sold as-is, so please take a close look at the pictures.  Don't miss your chance to own this unique and important part of baseball history!
