This is a rare vintage and out of print copy of THE SPARTAN written and illustrated by DON HARRISON in 1992 and published and distributed by ALYSON BOOKS of Boston. 173 pages in length and measures ‎5.5 x 0.75 x 8.75 inches. This book is unread. See photos for condition, sticker wear to front cover.

Pantarkes' goal is to enter the Olympics and win the laurel crown. But at the age of 16, after accidentally killing the son of a high official, Pantarkes is forced to flee from his native home in Sparta. For two years his Olympic dreams are postponed as he becomes embroiled in the wars and turmoil of the time.

This brisk-paced novel gives a vivid picture of classical Greece and the early Olympics, and of an era when gay relationships were a common and valued part of life.

Historic, violent and fascinating, Harrison account Pantarkes' life, Spartan culture, and the culture of athletic worship remains intimate as well. Although some of the explanatory historic facts are pressed into monologues, it's countered by some grueling action. The strictures of the culture don't exclude MALE LOVE, which is handled briefly, and acknowledged as normal for the era. I enjoyed re-reading this after finding a used copy at a local bookstore.
