SG1, 1d intense black, plate 1b, tied by a black Maltese Cross on cover addressed to Alderman Magnay at College Hill, Upper Thames Street, London. The stamp has no tears, creases or pinholes.
Date stamped on reverse with a double-arc Nottingham, April 5th 1841 and a further red single line circle received cancellation, 6th April.
William Magnay was a London merchant and was elelcted an alderman of the City of London for the Vintry Ward in 1838, a post he retained until 1841. He became sheriff of London in 1841 and was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1843. He was ennobled (1st Baronet of Postford House in the County of Surrey) in November 1844, becoming then Sir William Magnay.
