American Hand-Carved Burl-Wood "Mountain Man" Pipe Made in 2001, Signed: G.W.W. 01
This
hand-carved burl-wood pipe exhibits exceptional detail and carving
skills. The robust "Mountain Man" sports long hair, a
generous beard, and wears a very life-like animal pelt hat. The hat,
loosely based on a racoon-skin cap, retains the head and eyes making
it appear alive, as if a large weasel or pine marten is perched on
the man's head with its bushy tail draped on the man's shoulder for
balance. The critter's eyes are either inlaid or tinted with a dark
paint or stain. The wood is very heavy and dense, possibly a highly
figured hard maple- or fruitwood-burl, and the finish is likely
hand-rubbed oil.
The
pipe is signed on the base G.G.W. 01 as signed by Glen Wedmore (1919-2012),
a native of Omaha, Nebraska. He carved this piece in 2001 after he
retired to Sanford, Florida. The pipe, with its old-style
mouthpiece, is unused.
