An alternative way to fit this shelf is to chip away a line of plaster at the back of the fitted fireplace at the height of the fireplace rear, inset the back of the flat cast iron shelf into this recess and then refill. Additionally to give extra strength and stability it is also recommended to use a high temperature silicon adhesive on top of the fireplace rim where the shelf will sit.
