The Deutsche Mark was the symbol of the post-war economic miracle but with the introduction of the Euro as legal tender of the European Economic and Monetary Union on 1st January 1999, its 50-year history came to an end.

The coins and banknotes were demonetized on 1st January 2002 and since then can be exchanged at the Bundesbank free of charge for an unlimited period of time. The withdrawn cash is then melted down, shredded or deformed.

These D-Mark notes were professionally devalued by the Bundesbank and are a reminder of the traditional German currency. In the jar with a bamboo stopper they make a unique souvenir.
