The VOLLBEHR INCUNABULA and the BOOK OF BOOKS. Contains SEVEN FOLIO LEAVES (14 pages) of FINELY PRINTED PAGES REPRODUCED FROM THE GUTENBERG BIBLE. The pages are printed with HANDMADE ILLUMINATED TITLE LETTERS. The Bible pages are introduced by the transcript of an address by Frederick Ashley, Chief Assistant Librarian of the Library of Congress, that was given before the Eleventh National Conference on Printing Education held in the Library of Congress; and with some b&w photographs including one of Doctor Otto Vollbehr examining his copy of the Gutenberg Bible. The caption below the photo reads: "Collector of the three thousand volumes of fifteenth-century printing purchased by the United States Government for the Library of Congress at a cost of one million five hundred thousand dollars [approx. $33 million in today's money]."

Published by the Government Printing Office, Washington D.C., 1932. LIMITED to only 420 copies, this being copy #73. Folio, 10.5x13 inches, 24 unnumbered pages (12 leaves). Comes with its original slipcase

From the Colophon page (the last page): "Designed and printed by George Henry Carter...to the number of four hundred and twenty copies...impressed on handmade paper with Cloister types in two columns of forty-two lines each and illuminated with handmade initial letters similar to the Gutenberg Bible in the Library of Congress of the United States of America MCMXXXII".

VERY GOOD condition, age toning to the covers as normal, internally lovely. A solid, very presentable copy. The original slipcase is in rather poor condition, it is missing a piece on the top edge, has clear tape repairs / reinforcement on all sides, and is soiled; nonetheless the slipcase is original with its paper title label on the spine and it continues to protect the document well.
