Covered Gullah Sweetgrass Basket

The Gullah people traditionally lived in the "low country" of the southeastern United States, which are coastal areas extending from the Carolinas down into Florida that famously include the city of Charleston, South Carolina. This is a traditional Gullah basket with a lid; it is the perfect size for many uses! It was made by wrapping bundles of sweetgrass and pine needles with strips of palmetto leaves (the pine needles are the darker material.) This style of regional American basketry is practiced by descendants of African weavers that took those skills with them to the US, passing down the craft. This has a tag that was removed with the weaver's name:  Elizabeth Fraser. The tag is included but is no longer attached to the base. It measures approx 4” H x7” W x 7” D. It has a lovely light patina from age! Strong, complete and ready to be used and enjoyed!

Very Good Condition! There is some light wear on the base and one broken stitch on the side of the lid. (see first photo, to left of center.) No loss.
