A series that aimed for a writing touch that was better suited to the Japanese, among whom the tendency to press down heavily on the paper had generally become the norm due to the widespread use of ballpoint pens. Prepared for soft writing based on a heavy-handed writing style, the CUSTOM74 Series achieved a smooth writing touch. There were eight types of nib at the time of its launch, to which three more were added six years later in 1998, plus three more for the current 11 types

The Pilot's Custom 74 Clear is a timeless demonstrator pen, a design initially crafted to aid salesmen in showcasing the intricate filling mechanisms of early 20th-century fountain pens. While modern cartridge-converter pens like the Custom 74 simplify refilling akin to a ballpoint, the transparent demonstrator style has evolved into its own aesthetic.
Highlighted by dark grey opaque accents, these areas complement the transparency of the pen's design. Additionally, the opaque section on the grip conceals any small ink droplets that might otherwise be visible, a common occurrence in demonstrator pens.
With its clear barrel, not only can you observe the ink flow within, but you can also preemptively plan refills, ensuring you never run dry in the middle of writing. This characteristic of demonstrator pens eliminates the inconvenience of unexpectedly running out of ink.
