Ancient Egyptian painting Akhenaten make offering Sun God Atun Egypt Antique BC

Akhenaten

Akhenaten was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who ruled during the 18th Dynasty in the New Kingdom period, from around 1353 BC to 1336 BC. He is well-known for his religious reforms that involved the worship of a single deity, the sun disc Aten, instead of the traditional Egyptian pantheon of gods.
Akhenaten and his family are often depicted in Egyptian art making offerings to the sun god Atun. The offerings usually consisted of food, drink, and incense, which were presented on altars before images of the god. In some depictions, Akhenaten and his family are shown in the act of pouring libations, which involved pouring liquid offerings onto the ground or into a bowl as a symbolic act of nourishing the god.
The depictions of Akhenaten and his family making offerings to Atun were meant to reinforce the pharaoh's position as the mediator between the divine and the mortal worlds. By presenting offerings to the god, Akhenaten was demonstrating his piety and his ability to maintain the cosmic order, which was believed to depend on the actions of the pharaoh.

Overall, the depictions of Akhenaten and his family making offerings to Atun were an important part of the pharaoh's religious program, which aimed to establish a new form of worship that centered around the sun disc and the pharaoh as its representative on earth.
