Biblical scholar Rudolf Kittel first published his critical edition of the Biblia Hebraica ("Hebrew Bible") in 1901. The Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia is a fourth edition of that original work, published in Stuttgart by the German Bible Society. The text was released in single-edition installments from 1968 - 1976. The edition for sale here is the first complete edition of the Stuttgart version, printed in 1977.

The Biblia Hebraica is a complete translation of the Masoretic text as set down in the Leningrad Codex, the oldest known complete version of the Hebrew Bible. The Leningrad Codex dates to the 11th century A.D. The Masoretic text, transcribed between the 7th and 10th centuries by the Masoretes, a group of scholars and scribes whose work on the transcription of the Bible came to be considered authoritative in roughly the middle of the Common Era. The Masoretic text includes the full text of the 24 books of the Tanakh as well as critical and explanatory margin notes on spelling and pronunciation choices. Kittel's reproduction of the Leningrad Codex is considered definitive. This fourth edition is based on new research as much of Kittel's original work was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II.

All of this is a long way of saying that here, for sale, is a copy of the first collected edition of what is considered the most definitive modern pressing of the complete Hebrew Bible, including Rabbinical commentary. The body text is in modern Hebrew and the front matter is in Latin and German. This copy is in remarkably good condition for a book of its size and age -- it appears to have been very lightly used, if at all. Here are the condition notes:

Excellent used condition. No DJ (original). Exterior light orange cloth boards show minimal wear and no fading. Previous owner's name is inscribed in ink on the BFEP; otherwise, the interior is clean and unmarked with cream-colored pages (original) and no noticeable fading.
