The Spanish princess Catherine was the first wife of Henry VIII, and had previously married his elder brother Arthur.

Her first child, a boy, died after a few weeks and although she was pregnant five more times, only one child, Mary, born in 1516, survived.

Catherine's marriage was annulled in 1533.  As a devout Catholic she never accepted the divorce and died in isolation in 1536.
