This auction is for a fabulous and very rare, original early 19th century engraving by John Cousen.

This originally hand-colored aquatint engraving is from John Cousen’s The Woodlands. Titled ‘ Good to be King’. W Collins—RA Painter

Online info about engraver:

“John Cousen was a noted engraver of landscape scenes after his contemporaries. He was born in Bradford, Yorkshire and later apprenticed to engraver John Scott (1774-1827).

According to Bryan’s Dictionary, ‘His larger works after Turner, Stanfield and others are of great excellence, but his exquisite taste is best displayed in his smaller plates after Turner, especially those in the ‘Rivers of France’ which are full of poetic feeling.’

Cousen retired from art in 1864 due to ill health”

The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There may be a few minor imperfections to expect with age.

Measures 16.25” tall 17.75” wide with a fantastic nuetral French style striped accent mat. Frame seems to be a newer replacement but still vintage. Mat and engraving are antique.
