FROM THE COVER == AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION 3, like its acclaimed predecessors, presents the finest work of North American illustrators. Each year a truly representative collection of illustration in North America is selected, art created not only by professionals but by students as well. A jury picked from across the country meets annually in March in New York and chooses work for the yearly book and exhibition. To coincide with the publication, a symposium on illustration is held every fall.
The work in this third volume of AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION was selected by:
Bob Ciano = Art Director, Life, New York
Patrick JB Flynn = Art Director, The Progressive, Madison
Judy Garlan = Art Director Tlte Afloll/ic JJOlldtl], Boston
Steven Heller = Art Director, Ntr Yon lillus Bool Rn:in: ~ew lOtk.
Elton Robinson = An Director EXXO~ Corporation New York
Fred Woodward = Art Director, Texas Monthly, Austin
Edited by Edward Booth-Clibborn,
AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION admirably succeeds in advancing the aims of this enterprise:
• To give recognition to high standards of illustration and to encourage the development of up-and-coming illustrators and artists who will lead the way in bringing to the surface the many talents of the different cultures that exist in North America today
• To promote North American illustrators throughout the world through this annual and by exhibitions of original artwork. Over 350 illustrations in full color
REVIEWS = "AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION may be one of the best things to happen to domestic drawings and painting for print since N. C. Wyeth .... Beautifully printed and bound [it contains] some extraordinary examples of contemporary illustration. If you are an illustrator, it is also advised that you enter your work." = Dugald Stermer, CA Magazine
REVIEWS = "American illustration today is at a level of accomplishment and sophistication to match any point in history. Relationships or lack thereof with domestic and foreign illustration traditions and with current trends in the 'fine arts' are well represented in this ... annual. And for pretty pictures and exquisite printing AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION beats out much of its competition." = Library Journal
REVIEWS ="AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION differs from most works of this kind in that only one work is reproduced on each page, an arrangement that effectively highlights the individual illustration." = Walter Herdeg, Editor, Crap/us
REVIEWS ="AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION is a splash of color, a dramatically produced volume of original art by North American illustrators. It serves as an annual displaying over 350 reproductions, all jury selected works .... Its goal: to give recognition to and promote the efforts of graphic artists. As a package, it's tremendous, but judge the contents yourself." = San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle
