This is a really fine English portrait of a young woman. Facing the viewer she poses in a silk dress holding a basket of flowers, against a rural panorama. A gold watch hangs from a long chain fastened at her waist.

The sitter is believed to be Jane Bowness, nee Grimes, aged 16 years in 1842.

The artist is unknown.  It is a high quality work with the textures of skin and fabric handled with beautiful, luminous effect against a subdued background.
