DéESSE (born in 1954). Homage to Niki DE SAINT-PHALLE (1930-2002) . Paper mache sculpture

Niki de Saint Phalle’s exuberant practice emphasized femininity, performance, and collaboration as it rejected notions of the lone male genius. Saint Phalle is perhaps best known for her “Shooting Paintings”—canvases she made by firing a rifle at paint-filled balloons—and her sculptures of extravagant, voluptuous feminine forms, which she dubbed “Nanas.” Her practice included books, prints, films, theater sets, clothing, jewelry, and even perfume. Saint Phalle was also celebrated for her large-scale public works and architectural activations, which can be found around the world. Her most famous, perhaps, is the Tarot Garden sculpture park in the Tuscan countryside. Saint Phalle’s work belongs in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Museum Ludwig, the Stedelijk Museum, the Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. In 2021, MoMA PS1 mounted a major Saint Phalle retrospective. The artist’s work has sold for seven figures at auction.
