Inspired by Dante's "The Divine Comedy," Rodin infused his work with themes from the epic poem and named the portal "The Gates of Hell." Each statue within the ensemble represented a key character from the literary masterpiece.

In its original conception, "The Thinker" portrayed Dante himself, standing before the Gates of Hell, deeply immersed in contemplation over his monumental poem. In the final rendition, a miniature version of the statue perches atop the gates, silently pondering the infernal destiny of those below.

True to Rodin's vision, this sculpture presents a nude figure, mirroring the tradition of Michelangelo's heroic renderings. It serves as a representation not only of intellectual prowess but also of poetic expression, intertwining both aspects seamlessly.
