Victorian Mourning Black Glass Bead Beggars Bag
Drawstring Evening Purse
For consideration is this antique black glass
bead evening bag or purse. The style is called a beggar’s bag and it closes
with a drawstring. This is most likely a Victorian Mourning bag, made sometime
between the 1900s and the 1920s. It features small loops of beads alternating
with rows of beads.
The purse measures 9 inches long from the
opening to above the tassel ball. The opening measures 6 inches while flat and
a single hand can be inserted into the opening. The drawstrings measure 21
inches long relaxed. The tassel ball measures ¾ inch in diameter and the tassel
loops measure 5½ inches long. The rows of loops on the purse body measure 1
inch long.
The base tassel is a little weak with evidence
of a fractured loop and originally there may have been more loops on the tassel.
The fuchsia lining is fully intact and may have been replaced at some point in
time. There is no makers mark and this is in beautiful antique condition. Buyer
will pay shipping on a 2 pound box. Thank you for looking!
NOTE: For
women during the Victorian period, mourning attire included every conceivable
article of clothing as well as hair accessories, stationery, umbrellas, fans,
and purses.
