Antique Taghkanic Basket

RARE. Rustic wooden Taghkanic baskets were manufactured in a tiny, remote region of New York state by a handful of families that developed this craft beginning in the late 18th century. Along the way, they created a true classic American work basket! Sometimes these are called Bushwacker baskets, but this is a derogatory term. There are no longer weavers producing these, so this is a find! Taghkanic baskets are similar to Shaker examples but have particular traits that differ. This antique example is easily from the 19th century, and was woven primarily of oak. Note the characteristic double lashing at the rim, which is wider than tall, & the hand carved/ notched handle. The handle is  made from another type of hardwood, likely black ash, hickory or maple as woods of choice. Note the center of the base is raised, like in a fruit basket, another feature of classic Taghkanic baskets. This one is unusually large, measuring approx 14.5" H x 15.25" W x 15.25" D. Unsigned. Recently acquired from a large private collection. This is a strong and beautiful rustic example of this unique American basketry that would look incredible with other American antiques!

Very Good Condition! There are a few dark spots inside the basket that aren't noticeable on display; otherwise it is in excellent condition!
