The new series are special and historical because, On March 10, 2021 Secretary Janet L. Yellen met with Bureau of Engraving and Printing Director Leonard Olijar to provide the official signature for printing on the new 2021 series of United States paper currency.  During a ceremony in the Treasury Department’s Cash Room on Monday September 12, 2021 the BEP’s Director, Len Olijar, provided brief remarks after Secretary Janet Yellen swore in Chief Marilynn Malerba as the new Treasurer of the United States.  The ceremony is available to view on the Treasury's YouTube channel.  Prior to becoming Treasurer, Malerba served as the 18th Chief of the Mohegan Tribe and is the first woman to serve in the position in the Tribe’s modern history. With this ceremonial signing, the BEP is excited to issue currency bearing the signatures of a Native woman and a female Secretary of the Treasury in the near future. You can read more about Treasurer Malerba in the Treasury’s press release here.
