A very fine silver verge clock in a triple case, Richard Vick, London, watchmaker to his late Majesty, ca 1735.

Triple case, brass and silver exterior with tortoiseshell, interior still lined with the original green velvet. Both inner cases are made of silver and are in almost mint condition. Tortoiseshell with flaws.

White enamel dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes as well as original blued Louis XV Beetel & Poker steel hands. The dial and hands are in very good condition.

High-domed mineral glass with slight signs of wear.

Magnificently decorated, mercury-gilt full plate movement with verge escapement. Large diamond endstone, regulating disk with silver scale, this with pointer in the shape of a "hand with a stretched finger". Finely crafted verge escapement with foliage, mythical creatures and grimacing head, likewise very finely crafted baluster columns. Mirror-polished and blued steel parts. Signed on the plate 'R`d Vick, watchmaker to his late Majesty, London, 1085. This is Richard Vick, London. Vick is known to have made watches with repoussé cases by the famous George Michael Moser. (see "Richard Edgcumbe; The Gold Chaser, page 98 with a reference to photo 121).

The movement is in full working order, freshly cleaned and functionally checked by the watchmaker.

Richard Vick, in the Strand, was registered as an apprentice in 1692, becoming free of the Clockmakers Company in 1702 and Master of the Company in 1729.  He was also registered as Keeper of the Clocks at the Royal Palace; see: Baillie, Clockmakers and Watchmakers of the World, Second Edition, p. 27. he is known to have made a clock in St. James's Palace. Vick made a repeating clock for the King, a longcase clock by him is in Windsor Castle (this is illustrated in the Britten) and clocks included in the Ilbert Collection. Vick died in 1750.
