Description

Baracuda totem, Northern Australia, collected by Spencer in 1962, ex. Louis A. Allen Collection and is 19-3/8" in length.
From Louis A. Allen's 1972 catalog: "Since totems are an integral part of the ceremonies and are used in magic and in daily life, the story of the origin and powers of totems is featured on many of the carvings. The totem may be the primary theme--either in a sacred or secular role--or it may be shown in the backround or associated with one of the primary figures of the design." Mid 20th century or before.
