Antique WWII era Grether Manufacturing emergency portable signal lantern from a cargo/merchant ship. Non-working/untested condition. Bottom is marked Grether Manufacturing, Dayton, Ohio, 9-S-5293-L Type JR-1-S. These lanterns were hung on interior walls of ships to be used in the event of an emergency power loss. It was designed with a dual-power capability so it could run on battery and be plugged into an electric power source. I believe it still contains the battery inside, but it is certainly is a dead battery, if so. The top on/off switch moves freely. There are no cracks in the light cover and it is not foggy. The bulb inside is intact. It has some rust and a scratch here and there and one of the screws on the top is missing. Would make a great piece to add to a collection or for a display piece. It measures approx. 10" tall x 7.75" wide x 4" deep and weighs approx 4 lbs, 4 oz.
