Santa Clara Bear Paw Pot by Greg Garcia

This pot is accented with three bear paw prints, a traditional design found at Santa Clara Pueblo. The bear is adept at locating water in the natural world, so it was good luck to put a bear paw design on a water vessel. Today, the design has found it's way onto all manner of Santa Clara wares. This piece was made by Greg Garcia (1961-2010). He learned how to make Santa Clara pottery in all the old ways by his grandmother, the revered Severa Tafoya. This was made by hand of local clay harvested and prepared with much manual labor involved. Then he handbuilt it using the coil method, and polished the outer surface with a stone. The firing process was done outside using natural fuel, with the pot smoked at the end to get the deep black color. This is signed Greg Garcia, Santa Clara, 12-89 on the base. It measures approx 3" H x 3.75" W x 3.75" D. There is a hairline crack in the neck as shown, priced accordingly. This displays well and would look fabulous in any collection of southwest arts!
