• Victor W. Butler is a retired sergeant and one of the last known surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen known as the Red Tails, a unit whose success eventually helped desegregate the military. He served as a Tuskegee Airmen from 1941 to 1946.

“At first, I was going to join the Canadian Air Force with a friend of mine, but after I had signed up, my mother and father wouldn’t approve of it. So, I joined with the American Air Force,” said Butler.

Butler served as a mechanic in Tuskegee, Alabama, working on the legendary planes while dealing with racism. “The airfield was very nice. It was the visit to the town that was bad,” said Butler.

“Being in Tuskegee, Alabama, it wasn’t very acceptable to white people for black soldiers to be walking around,” he said.

While Butler is decorated with awards, coins and many accomplishments, he hoped people across the country would send him a birthday card to celebrate his big 100th birthday on May 21, 2022. As of May 18th, .
