6.75” Oaxaca barro negro vessel with three legs, unsigned.

Oaxacan black clay wares have been produced for thousands of years in the San Bartolo Coyotepec area outside of Oaxaca, Mexico. These were utilitarian more than decorative wares until the 1950s. At this point, Mexican potter Doña Rosa Real introduced a way to add metallic sheen to the grey pottery by rubbing and compressing the clay with quartz prior to firing. As compressing the clay renders these pieces more brittle, they are more ornamental than utilitarian.

This piece and the others I have listed are from the estate of a world-traveled collector of folk art, artesanías, pottery, and decorative objects. Most of these were collected in the mid to late 20th century.

These piece is in excellent condition. Please feel free to message me with any questions. I have and strive to keep 100% happy buyers.
