The Mayan calendar dates back to at least the 6^th century BC.  It is similar in many aspects with the calendars used by other civilizations but the Mayan calendars are the best-documented and most completely understood.

The Maya had three calendars:

  TZOLKIN - a sacred calendar

  HAAB -  the civil calendar of the Mayas (this is the calendar represented in our pendants)

  And a Long Count, which was used for inscriptions

The Haab is made up of 18 months of 20 days each,  plus a period of five days at the end of the year known as Uayeb. This gives a year length of 365 days.

Mayan inscriptions have demonstrated that the names for these twenty-day periods varied considerably from region to region and from period to period.  The Silversmith that specializes in recreating this wonderful Mayan Zodiac Calendar pendants has based his information on a book published in Mexico called “México A traves de los Siglos”  this is a very respected and well know book about the Mexican History through the Centuries. 

You may be able to find a copy of this book in some Libraries in the U.S.  I know U.C.L.A. has a copy
