The
very first release in the new O Canada series a meticulously rendered
Inukshuk in raised relief, framed against icy mountains and a frigid,
frozen sea. Look closely at the background and you’ll see the
Aurora Borealis (
Northern
Lights) illuminating the
Arctic
sky in a dazzling display of shimmering light! The distinct design
hallmark of the O Canada series has the central image set between two
semi-circular banners (each laser polished to a gleaming, mirror-like
finish) with the top band proudly proclaiming the legend
“Canada”, and the denomination in the lower band.
Landmark in a Barren Land
An
inukshuk (plural form:
inuksuit;
singular form often pronounced
inutsuk
in certain Inuit dialects) is a stone landmark used as a milestone or
directional marker by the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. Inuksuit have
become the de facto symbol of the Territory of Nunavut since its
establishment on April 1, 1999. An inukshuk can even be found on the
official flag of the territory.
In the Inuit language, the word “Inukshuk” means "in the
likeness of a human being"; as such, it is a powerful symbol of
survival, family and community. Dotting the vast northern lands,
inukshuks (also known as inuksuks) can take different forms for
specific purposes, such as ways to mark fishing and hunting grounds,
traditional animal migration routes, or as a welcome sign that says
“You are on the right path” to a lonely traveler in the
otherwise featureless and forbidding
Arctic
landscape. Subscribe now!
Inuksuit differ from some cairns in significance.
The
Arctic Circle,
dominated by permafrost, has few natural landmarks and thus the
inukshuk can be central to navigation across the barren tundra. They
vary
in shape and size, and perform a diverse array of tasks. It is a symbol
with deep roots in the Inuit culture, a directional marker that
signifies safety, hope and friendship. As time goes by more and more
people of non-Inuit origin are adopting this uniquely Canadian
symbol as one of their own!
