Bronze horse front
 marble based Statue

The horse commonly appears in Greek mythology. It is alternately a wild force to be tamed or conquered and a faithful ally in battle.
This valued animal was also used in religious practices, often in the form of a sacrifice. Burial chambers and Classical sources provide evidence of the horse's sacrificial role, one that is sometimes tied to the mythology associated with it.

The original horse, of which only the front part remains, was dedicated to Athena ca 490-480BC and is now in the Akropolis Museum in Athens.

The horse would have stood alone, without a rider and was a symbol of victory in a race for horses alone.
