From the number of questions we get asked, there is often some confusion about what thread is used on normal air compressors and airtools. The thread on most air compressors, fittings and air tools is called BSP Thread ( British Standard Pipe Thread ). BSP Thread is not a metric thread, BSP is in simple terms the old British Standard Whitworth Thread, this thread has been internationally adopted as the standard thread for connecting pipes. Most hobby air compressors use the common thread size of 1/4 BSP. However the confusion comes from the fact that 1/4 BSP does not mean that it " measures " 1/4 inch imperial, the 1/4 BSP only means that it is a 1/4 BSP Thread and that is not a measurement. Hope that makes some sense.
