HISTORY OF GORREANA TEA:

The oldest tea factory in Europe is located on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores. It’s called Gorreana, it was established in 1883 and is still run by the same people that founded it, the Gago da Câmara family. Tea plantations (as well as tobacco and sweet potato plantations) were set up on the islands in the 19th century, when Chinese masters were brought over to teach the locals how to tend to the plants, which responded well to such fertile soil and the island’s humidity. The farming, picking, drying and packing processes are the same that they’ve always been, which makes Gorreana teas not only chemical free but also made in the old-fashioned way: by hand. The brand produces around 40 tons a year, in four varieties: three black (Orange Pekoe, Pekoe and Broken Leaf) and one green (Hysson). Gorreana teas are sold in a number of gourmet shops and stores specialising in Portuguese products.
