This sponge filter is great to use in a small fish tank. It provides both mechanical and biological filtration. It contains plenty of surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. The bacteria helps break down harmful waste such ammonia and nitrite. When connected with an air pump by airline tubing, they will create minute bubbles to increase oxygen content in water. This sponge filter does not trap fish fry and are safe for small size fish like dwarf cichlid, guppy, killifish, betta, etc. (Air pump and airline tubing sold separately). 

Maintenance:

Rinse the sponge 2-3 times every month with running water. Do not use hot or cold water or detergent when rinsing the sponge to avoid killing the beneficial bacteria.
