Some tribes mixed the meal with other vegetables such as beans, squash, and corn. The seed was also cracked and eaten for a snack. There are references of squeezing the oil from the seed and using the oil in making bread.

Sunflower seeds are the gift of the beautiful sunflower that has rays of petals emanating from its bright yellow, seed-studded centre. The flower produces greyish-green or black seeds encased in tear-dropped shaped grey or black shells that oftentimes feature black and white stripes.
