TENDRIL IN MESH
William Everson (Brother Antoninus)

Book Description: San Francisco: Cayucos Books, printed by Clifford Burke at Cranium Press, 1973; Proof / Trial-Run Copy, unbound, 8” x 12”, 24 leaves (48 unnumbered pages); SIGNED by EVERSON on the Colophon page; Un-numbered Proof includes text for limited edition: “The edition is limited to 250 numbered copies signed by the author. This is copy number...”

Chronologically, this was the first major poetic work of Everson to appear since the Rose of Solitude in 1967. Everson first read the poems contained in this book at UC Davis in 1969 - at the completion of the reading, he stripped off his religious habit and returned to private life after 18 years with the Dominican Order. Everson had strong ties to Kenneth Rexroth and was a devotee of Robinson Jeffers' work. An interesting, colorful figure, he eventually went on to found the Lime Kiln Press at UC Santa Cruz in the 1980s.

Book Condition: Very Good condition, the netting around the spine is creased (probably as normal for this proof or trial-run copy), otherwise just light signs of handling and still tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

Additional Information: William "Bill" Everson (September 10, 1912 – June 3, 1994), also known as Brother Antoninus, was an important American poet of the San Francisco Renaissance and was also a literary critic and small press printer.

Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper.

"Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
