Beschreibung / Description:

A 93 track, 3 CD collection with 32 page booklet containing comprehensive sleevenotes from Dave Henderson of MOJO / Glastonbury Festival. Famous Flames have made a name for themselves by producing thoughtful and intelligently designed rock'n'roll compilations for the discerning music fan and completist alike. From their exposition of the history of rock'n'roll on The First Rock and Roll Record to an ode to the instrumental record with The Backbeat Of Rock and Roll Seminal Sounds from the Instrumental Era, Famous Flames create distinctive and unique collections. Famous Flames are proud to unveil their latest offering: Restless! Reckless! and Reviled! - Untamed Youth, The Original Rebels Of Rock 'n' Roll, a three-disc odyssey of teenage angst and rebellion from a generation that were spiraling out of control. The collection is a who's who of '50s law breakers, tough guys and roughnecks who'd be the central pivot for tabloid scoops if such a thing had existed way back then...In the late 1950s, post war austerity and a deepening recession had given birth to a generation of disgruntled teenagers. They were filled with attitude and looking to a new wave of anti-heroes in movies and music. Brando and James Dean were taunting authority on the big screen, and as the former would remark about his character in The Wild One, 'There's a line in the picture where he snarls, 'Nobody tells me what to do', that's exactly how I've felt all my life.' A spirit of rebellion was in the air and universal. Inspired by this rebellious spirit, the music scene was also throwing up its fair share of mavericks. The law-abiding Elvis had created the generation gap by curling his lip and shaking his hips, but he was a pussycat compared to what was on the other side of the tracks. Though while Elvis donned convict duds for 'Jailhouse Rock' and hammed up the hard-done-by blues on 'Heartbreak Hotel', it was his alluring snarl on 'Hound Dog' and its strident swaggering put downs that gave him continued rebel credibility. Presley's very presence had threatened the establishment, but it was the likes of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran who delivered lyrical one-liners that summed up a growing sense of disquiet with society. It seemed that rules were there to be broken and Vincent and Cochran's off the cuff cynicism, and 'so what' bluntness, quickly elevated them to bad boy role models. These are the defining tunes of youth misspent and riddled with stories of devil may care antics, love from the wrong side of the tracks and a desire to party like there's no tomorrow. The 93 tracks collected here gave teenagers an identity, a set of alternative beliefs and the earliest form of their own scene outside of the mainstream. Amid the brash bravado and tales of one-upmanship from the famous, the not so famous and the downright infamous, there are simply breathtaking moments of left field clarity. Tommy Blake's 'F--olding Money', which would be later covered by The Fall, is wild and supremely off the cuff, like overhearing something you just know that you shouldn't. While Gene Summers' incendiary 'School Of Rock 'n' Roll' sounds like a mixed up CV for modern music, and Milton Allen's 'Don't Bug Me Baby' has more attitude than the law of averages allows; other vintage one-offs include Peanuts Wilson's 'Cast Iron Arm', Ike Turner's debut with Jackie Brenston on 'Rocket 88', Vince Taylor's triumphant 'Brand New Cadillac' and the rambunctious 'Lights Out' by Jerry Byrne. There is an element of danger throughout this collection. The artists' actual brushes with the law, or the heroes and villains of their songs, provide a kind of reality TV rollercoaster of sheer excitement, a real spirit of rebellion, the idea that there was a new set of rules and that even the rule book itself might get ripped up.
