THIS LISTING IS FOR A GORGEOUS ANTIQUE TAISHO PERIOD JAPANESE SATSUMA PORCELAIN ENAMEL DECORATED BOWL, c. 1912-1926.

THIS HIGH QUALITY SATSUMA BOWL IS BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED WITH POLYCHROME ENAMELS AND HAS AN ELABORATE USE OF GOLD ON A NATURAL CREAM COLORED BACKGROUND.  THE INTERIOR IS DECORATED WITH FINE INTRICATE DETAILS FEATURING TWO PHEASANTS WITH COLORFUL FLOWERING TREES AND A RIVER ON LOWER LEFT SIDE. THERE IS A NARROW DECORATED BAND JUST BELOW THE SCALLOPED UPPER RIM.

THE EXTERIOR OF THE BOWL IS UNUSUALLY DECORATED WITH A HEAVILY GILDED FLORAL DESIGN SURROUNDING THE BOWL ON A DEEP COBALT BLUE BACKGROUND WITH A DECORATIVE GOLD BAND BELOW THE FLORAL DESIGN.

 MEASURES 2 1/2" HIGH AND 6 1/8" IN DIAMETER. WEIGHS JUST UNDER 1 POUND.

 THE CONDITION IS EXCELLENT WITH NO CHIPS, CRACKS OR REPAIRS. THE ENAMELED DESIGN IS HEAVILY APPLIED, THE COLORS ARE CRISP AND THERE IS NO WEAR TO THE ENAMELING.

BOWL IS MARKED WITH THE SHIMAZU FAMILY CREST. 

SATSUMA POTTERY IS A YELLOWISH EARTHENWARE USUALLY DECORATED WITH DETAILED JAPANESE FIGURES WITH EXPRESSIVE FACIAL FEATURES, LANDSCAPES AND OFTEN FURTHER EMBELLISHED WITH DRAGONS IN RELIEF.

 THIS POTTERY WAS GENERALLY CREATED FOR THE EXPORT MARKET OF THE MID-19th CENTURY TO CATER TO WESTERN MARKETS.
