Stromatolites are layered bio-chemical accretionary structures [algea] formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of micro-organisms. This Cretaceous aged specimen is 'relatively' young, considering the Stromatolites from the Strelley Pool Formation, found in Australia, are dated to more than 3.5 billion years old and classed as the oldest fossil to date! This formation is within the Pilbara Supergroup and an extremely important site for scientists to study.
