As the regional spiritual director (Demiurge), your task in Afterlife is to provide a world in which the recently deceased can "live" until their final resting place, heaven or hell, is decided. The game, written in a humorous vein, is a non-linear world-building simulation. Creation of the Afterlife world involves developing real estate on two planes simultaneously. The game features more than 200 "rewards and punishments" to be given to your population and close to 300 detailed and specific building tiles used during the creation process.

To deal with the learning curve, Afterlife has a built-in tutorial in which two mentors guide you by providing information to make your transition from ordinary game player to Demiurge easier. These two guides, Aria and Jasper, work for the top bosses in heaven and hell respectively and each slants their spiel toward the two locations in question. Other features in Afterlife include random disaster events, maps, charts and graphs to keep track of the action. The interface is mouse driven and utilizes a detailed menu system for executing game tasks
