Hanna-Barbera

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera first met while working at the MGM cartoon studio in 1939, where both became directors. MGM decided in 1957 to close the cartoon division, believing it had acquired a reasonable backlog of shorts for re-release. A scant 2 months after the MGM closure, Hanna-Barbera Productions was born with backing from Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn. Screen Gems would become the distributor of the new venture. The resulting history is the stuff of legends.

Hanna-Barbera studio rapidly controlled over 80% of children's programming for television at the start of 1970s and secured the top three Saturday morning ratings as well, making them the world's biggest and largest animation company in the business.

The two men and their company yielded over 152 animated television shows for network and syndication and 31 television movies, 48 television specials, 12 theatrical films, 48 theatrical shorts and 25 direct-to-video features were also produced by the studio. Many of Hanna-Barbera's cartoons were distributed and seen internationally worldwide in over 175 countries in 45 languages.

For their achievements, Hanna and Barbera together won seven Academy Awards, eight Emmy Awards, a Governors Award, a Golden Globe Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The pair was also inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1993.
