When do I need a galvanic isolator? : You need an isolator if you plug into a marina shore power mains supply. Whenever your boat is connected to the shorepower supply (regardless of the amount of power you use) it creates a connection to earth via the 3 core mains cable. This in turn connects you to other boats & metal pontoons or pylons driven into the earth. This interconnection can accelerate galvanic corrosion & often results in rapid anode loss ,corrosion of underwater fittings including propellers, shafts, skin fittings etc. & in the case of metal hulled vessels the hull itself is attacked. Fitting a galvanic isolator can prevent this increase in corrosion & extend the life of essential anodes.
When don't I need an isolator? : If you never use a shore power connection i.e. you are moored at sea or in an estuary without shorepower availability, you only use a generator on board for your mains supply or you rely on 12 / 24 volts for your appliances.
Why can't I just remove the earth wire from my mains cable? : The "earth" wire in your mains cable is essential for your safety. This wire must never be removed. In the event of an electrical failure on board the vessel the earth cable carries the fault current safely to the shore minimizing electrical shocks & ensuring the fuses & breaker devices operate correctly.
