Walking onions (Allium cepa var. proliferum) produce bulbs above ground
on tall stalks. As the stalks mature, they drop to the ground, a few
inches away from the roots. The bulbs at the top of the stalks root and
grow a new plant. Over several seasons, the plants will travel across
the ground. Walking onions grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant
hardiness zones 5 through 9. Though a perennial, walking onions are
commonly grown as an annual crop. Other common names include Egyptian
walking onion, tree onion and top onion.
