This is a vintage WW2 period cast aluminum model and metal ashtray. Research suggests that this may have been a gift from the North American Aviation (NAA) factory to the staff of the 345th Bomb Group Ops. It most likely came through the NAA technical rep, Jack Cox, who was based in Australia. Early in 1943, the 345th was about to take delivery of the first B-25G Factory Gunship/Strafers designed to eliminate enemy barge and boat traffic.

I replicated the original nameplate. I surmised that "G's for the Apaches" meant B-25 "G" models for the Air Apaches. The Indian statue is a homage to the group's chosen nickname and logo. The statue is in full regalia and aggressively armed for battle just like the B-25G "Super Strafer".

This ashtray will also receive a SANDMAN Certificate of Overhaul
along a SO Serial Number.

Dimensions: Airplane-wingspan 6" x overall length of 4-1/2". The vintage model Indian stands approximately 4". Base measures 6" wide x 6.5" long.

This was acquired six years ago from an antique mall in eastern PA. It was well worn with most of the paint gone and the original nameplate too damaged by rust to stay intact. It has been worth that overhaul five years ago just to keep the artifact preserved. Please review the steps as follows-

1) Remaining lead paint and other residues were carefully removed and disposed.
2) Missing props were replaced by NOS cast units from the 1940's
3) The two missing .50 cal gun barrels were missing and replaced.
4) The cannon was carefully cleaned.
5) Model was cleaned and polished
6) New markings and insignia were secured and installed.
7) The Indian statue was repaired and painted to more closely match the Air Apaches logos.
8) Base and support Arm received period correct bronze paint and was clear coated.
9) Replacement nameplate was made using aluminum and clear coated to reduce corrosion.
10) Rusted hardware was replaced and some updated to ease assembly.

Item has some wear from various display functions over the last five years but is still ready to be a standout in yours! It is rare to find articles from this theater of operations let alone an excellent artifact celebrating the 345th, an aggressive air outfit in the South Pacific. Note that the ashtray will be disassembled for safe packing and I will supply re-assembly instructions. This includes the props and prop shafts (which spin with authority!)
