For many people Lexicon is the definitive brand of digital reverb. Along with EMT, Lexicon dominated the market in the 1980s, with a range of devices from the PCM70 and Lexicon 200 to high-end units like the legendary 480L

Lexicon subsequently developed their own proprietary digital reverb processor, the Lexichip, which allowed them to build cheaper, more compact effects processors. A new version of that processor, the Lexichip II, led to the Lexicon PCM 80 and the Reflex

The Reflex is not just a reverb processor. It has a wide variety of programs (see listing below) and, unlike the Alex, it includes full Midi implementation allowing real-time control of parameters. Lexicons as far back as the PCM70 offered Midi control but the Reflex is the first time it's been offered in this price range

The Reflex is designed to be quick & easy to use with 16 presets and 128 user memories (Alex: 16 memories). The front panel is super-simple with a signal LED, Input / Mix / Output controls, (Mix varies the blend of effect and dry signal), Store / Clear button, Parameter / Learn button (to select the parameter to edit or to enter APM - Advanced Programming Mode), a Value knob (to edit that parameter), digital display and a Register / Preset knob to select a program

The Learn function allows Midi signals to be patched to control a parameter. Enter APM mode by pressing & holding the Parameter / Learn button, select the parameter to be controlled, send a Midi message and the assignment is done

Each preset has up to 10 parameters that can be edited (Alex: 3), two from the front panel and the rest via APM. Modified programs can be saved into any of 128 user memories. If you want more in-depth editing than the Reflex can provide, there are more Lexicons in my eBay store

The Reflex has many similarities to the earlier Alex but adds a more powerful reverb processor (the Lexichip II), additional User memory slots (128 vs 16), improved front-panel editing and a comprehensive Midi implementation. Using the processor from the PCM80 means the Reflex has access to improved algorithms to make reverbs more polished & realistic

Technical

Stereo inputs & outputs are unbalanced on jack sockets and the unit works at a nominal -2 dBu level. The input will accept signals down to -30 dBu and signal presence / overload are shown on a dual-colour signal LED. A footswitch jack socket allows remote control of effect bypass and register steps, and the manual has instructions on creating chains of effects and stepping through them. Midi In and Out/Thru are provided on standard 5-pin DIN sockets and the Out/Thru switch is via an internal jumper. Power input is via an external 9 VAC power unit (supplied) which plugs into a standard UK power socket
