Everything was purchased directly from the elderly surviving relative of an English Protestant Missionary who settled in Beijing in the 19th century. His son (the grandfather of the seller) remained in China and ended up a high ranking officer in the Shanghai Municipal Police. He re-located his family (along with a large amount of Chinese porcelain and furniture) back to England around the time of World War 2. All items were purchased by the family prior to 1940. Many items have been entered into a top London auction for their Asian sale. I have included a few photographs of items/rooms in the house as corroboration of provenance as the last photograph(s) in some of the listings (they are not included in the sale, nor are any stands used for display).
