Are all shad created equal? No, they are not. When fishing a soft plastic jerk bait the action of the bait is very important, but for the bait to really be effective it needs to stay in the water. The Mad Man Mad Shad does just that. I have used several soft plastic jerk baits and the problem that I have with most of them is that they pop out of the water when aggressively retrieved. In the mornings and evenings the fish are normally very aggressive and move around more chasing food. This means that they will go for a faster moving bait more often than slow moving bait. Now, when the heat gets up during the day this same bass will slow down and try to conserve energy and digest the meal from earlier in the day. This means that I have to slow down my presentation to trigger the fish to bite. The Mad Man Mad Shad lets me do both.

Now we know that shad are one of the bass' favorite meals along with crawfish. During the summer months it is very common to find a school of bass under a school of shad. The bass will move into a school of shad and slap at them to injure or disable them. Once that occurs the shad will begin to fall. This is when the bass will come and eat the injured shad. Some bass will also try moving thru the school of shad and pick off as many as they can catch and then suspend under the school again. When you are out on the water and you see this kind of activity going on it is prime time to pick up a quick limit of bass. All that you need is a Mad Shad and a 4/0 hook. The 4/0 hook will give the Mad Shad enough weight to produce a natural fall towards the bottom. Give the bait a couple of jerks and the Mad Shad will look just like an injured shad falling thru the school towards the bottom. Now, when you see the school of shad and you have your Mad Shad ready, move in towards the school close enough to cast into the middle of the school. Caution: this technique is capable of getting your arm broke!

Another great technique is skipping the natural colors of the Mad Shad under boat docks using spinning tackle. The spinning tackle will save you time because you are free from backlashes and will provide you better sensitivity with slack line. Try to skip the bait all the way under the dock and let the shad fall beside the dock posts. This is a very effective technique during those hours when the bass are least active.
