Obverse design features the legs of a running athlete with a stylised stopwatch in the background and the value 50 PENCE below. The fifty pence reverse design for 2004 celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Roger Bannister's astonishing feat of human achievement – breaking the four-minute mile barrier. The coin's reverse was designed by celebrated sculptor, James Butler RA, whose design conveys the sense of dedication and commitment to achieving a formidable goal which Roger Bannister did in 1954.
