HISTORY

In 1758 Benjamin Franklin wrote the essay, "The Way to Wealth" presenting advice on work ethics and frugality.

This advice was included in the very popular Poor Richard's Almanac, a yearly publication, published by Benjamin Franklin from 1732 to 1758.

Poor Richard's Almanac offered advice or adages, weather forecasts, household hints, puzzles, poems, astrological information, and more.

Poor Richard's Almanac was mostly known for Franklin's advice, and this advice was printed on popular mugs, beginning in the 1830s. If this mug was produced in the middle of the 19th century, in 1850, it would be 172 years old. Exact age of this mug unknown. Mug has been in the family for many decades. It is very, very old.

CONDITION

Handle is securely fastened.

Mug has crazing, wear, aging, tiny chips on the rim and bottom, bottom has glaze drops.

On the rim: 2 tiny chips about 1/8" each. The worst of the 2, photo 11. A crack on the rim about 1/2" Photo 10.

Teeny-tiny chips on the outer edge of the lip, from the "o" in "of" to the letter "o" in "borrow". Photos 1 & 12.

Bottom of mug has about 12 tiny chips. The majority of them in photo 9. The largest is about 1/2" long, with excess glaze attached next to the chip. Photo 8.

Hairline fracture on the handle. Photo 7.

Illustration was created by the transferware process. During this process some of the brown color was smeared (example, photo 2) not all of the letters printed (example, photo 1) and brown color appears here and there (for example, on the handle, photo 2).

Here and there under the glaze, tiny: bumps, black & brown dots, indentations.

Overall, this rare mug is in good solid beautiful condition, especially taking into consideration the age of the mug.
