Recently rebound in half-calf over marbled boards with raised bands and gilt lettering on spine. pp. [Blank, 3], [title page], [copyright page], [dedication page], [blank], 3-312, [blank], plus six plates of illustration interspersed. Binding fine; text good: new endpapers; moderate foxing throughout; frontispiece lacking; 1/4” circular loss affecting middle of image on plate marked page 217 which is incorrectly bound at pp. 213.
Born in Ohio in 1813, Jonathan Harrington Green, better known as “Captain Green from Texas to Boston,” was well known for his card playing skills. While still a young man, he became a professional gambler, exhibiting his talent on riverboats cruising along the Mississippi.
In this book, he attributes his path in life to a rough beginning after his mother died when he was seven years old, and his father was not able to properly care for him. Without any real guidance to show him otherwise, he was lured astray by bad company, until 1842 when he renounced the evils of gambling.
Thus began the second stage of his life when he became known as the Reformed Gambler, touring the country and lecturing to groups about illegal gaming, cultivating a following by those who shared his views. During his crusade, he became an agent for the New York Suppression of Gambling from 1850 to 1851. He authored several books to expose the tricks of the trade, criticizing the unsavory vice. This one specifically was “Designed as a warning to the young men of this country.”
