KING JOHN AT DAWLISH - 6026 'King John' by John Austin FGRA

A real favourite with Railway Enthusiasts and us here at Hansen Fine Art, the GWR King was the ultimate expression of the railway's 4-6-0 four-cylinder design and was one of the most powerful locomotives to run in Britain.

Very much the publicity-machine of the GWR, members of the class were at first lauded as the most powerful locos in Britain and the first example 6000 King George V sent on tour to the USA in 1927, where it achieved some remarkable feats for a loco of its size. They were upgraded during WWII to make better use of the lower grade coals available and by the end of steam, their axle loading of over 22-tons, which had prevented them travelling on any but the best laid routes had been helped by the laying of better track. Three would be preserved and still attract a most devoted following.
