Russia, Romanov Imperial velvet covered, desk mounted portfolio (photograph 2). The monogram of Alexander III (1881 - 1894), is positioned in the centre of the portfolio (photograph 1), with gold braid around edges. The inside of the open portfolio is lined with yellow silk (photograph 3), and the back, decorated with gold braid around the edges, and four gilded metal supports for resting the portfolio on a desk (photograph 4). The portfolio was probably made for a Russian palace by Ovchinnikov of Moscow. There is a similar portfolio, decorated by Faberge for Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra, in the Victoria and Albert museum, London. A Russian 25 ruble bank note from 1909 is included with the portfolio, and shows a portrait of Alexander III on it's reverse side (photograph 5). The length of the portfolio is 56 cm, the width 46.2 cm, the depth 2.7 cm, and the weight 2.36 kg.
